BNPB Review Sabo Dam in Kali Gendol

Yogyakarta, 11/16/2010 (Media Center Kominfo, 14:00) - Head of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Syamsul Maarif and its related parties, directly reviewing the Sabo Dam which located at the Kali Gendol stream around Ngemplak area, Sleman regency, Yogyakarta.

Accompanied, Head of Central Region-Opak Serayu River, the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works (PU), Bambang Hargono and his entourage, Syamsul said, people are asked to not do any activity around Kali Gendol.

Sabo Dam which reviewed by BNPB and entourage located at 16th dam from total 22 dams along the flow of the kali gendol, which was situated in the hamlet Morangan-Plumbon border, Sindu Martani, Ngemplak Sleman District, Yogyakarta on Tuesday (16/11).

The 16th Sabo Dam is the last dam which drained by debris or volcanic material from the eruption of Merapi mixed with water, sand, mud, rocks, tree trunks which were being swept from the peak of Mount Merapi last Friday.

Before reviewing the 16th dam, Syamsul also reviewed the 17th dam which situated in Bangsan hamlet, village of Bimo Mertani, Ngemplak district, Sleman region. The dam is not affected by debris and river flow is still observed normal and the water looks clear.

Syamsul added that the moment cold lava that accumulates along the river has not been lifted, because the conditions are still hot.

"No one has dared to enter the area yet, even surrounding air is still hot, so wait for better the possible conditions, " he said.

He said he has not allowed the public to be at the river, because it is still dangerous and along with cold lava still contained a fire that reached 400 degrees Celsius heat.

"The smoke still be seen," said Syamsul as he showed his finger toward the big tree that was still burning by lava and stuck in Sabo .

After the condition is normal or not hot anymore, people are allowed to mine sand and rock that was there.

While Bambang Hargono said, the other function of Sabo is to hold debris that allows people to mine sand, stone and wood as well as connecting roads between villages.

Even so, miners have to ask permission to the local governments concerned, because the miners are not allowed to damage the river conditions that affect the condition of the river or take too much to the bottom of the river and river embankments.

According to him, mining permits can be obtained from local governments, while the technical license from the Central Public Works Yogyakarta Special Region.

He said he is currently checking the conditions of sabo in order to maximize the effectiveness to restrain the glide of cold lava. Sabo helps a lot, so the danger is not too big on the downstream river.

From about 15 rivers flowing from Mount Merapi, as much as 244 from 300 sabo which soon built along the river has been built.

Also, BNPB along with Public Works also has and still installed equipment or early warning system to quickly inform the public in downstream whether cold lava flood occur at any time.
